It is not an easy task for people to recognize the times when they were in the wrong. Who wants to willingly be the villain in someone’s story? Even more of a struggle, how honest can one be with themselves when deep down they feel that the biggest problem in their life is them? Young R&B singer-songwriter Maleah DAWN becomes a reference for this type of honesty and vulnerability in being self-aware through her latest single "U Played Yourself".

Maleah DAWN Photographed at January 2023 performance in Soule' coffe+boba house, located in Jackson Mississippi.
U Played Yourself gives a fusion of inspiration from the tone and flow of Mary J Blige to SZA’s depth and meaning through Maleah's lyricism, with lines like-
“So I always play myself, I just can’t seem to ask for help / Know you know me well, I don’t even think I know myself- I can’t even speak up for myself so how I’m gonna get my peace to heal, for real”
This record is riddled with self-doubt and insecurity in a way that is truly a plea for help and an earnest desire to heal. Maleah is a Jackson, Mississippi native and her ability to create such open and safe spaces for her audience is emotionally authentic. Not to mention the effect she brings with the depth of her words, and it probably doesn’t hurt that she shares these artistic gifts from her father, a fellow poet that led her to spoken word poetry as she is now here with her biggest strength of creativity yet: music for the soul.
